For starters, the story sees the Second Doctor traveling once more with companion Jamie McCrimon, who now has knowledge of the Time Lords, and having a brand new TARDIS console. One aspect that was looked at in the book was the Second Doctor’s appearance in the above-mentioned stories, and while his physical appearance is certainly a big factor in proving 6B’s existence, there are several plot points in “The Two Doctors” that also support the idea that this Doctor is one from after “The War Games” (1969). Season 6B was first termed in the 1995 book, The Discontinuity Guide by Paul Cornell, Martin Day and Keith Topping. As many fans noted, the Second Doctor’s hair should still be darker, as if he was plucked out of time, he would look exactly the same as he did during his regeneration. Instead of the mop of black hair seen during his run, Troughton’s hair is now gray. But the evidence doesn’t end there, the biggest and most important piece supporting the idea that the Second Doctor may not have regenerated straightaway are his appearances in the television stories, “The Five Doctors” (1983) and “The Two Doctors” (1985).īoth stories have Troughton reprising the role of The Doctor, yet naturally he looks older. However, shows have continuity errors all the time, and they don’t need an explanation, especially something so miniscule as The Doctor now having a ring. For starters, when the regenerated Third Doctor first appears he has several items he didn’t have when audiences last saw him, such as a ring and bracelet. Immediately there is evidence that supports 6B. But what really is it? What stories take place during this lost season, and most importantly, what does it all have to do with Patrick Troughton’s hair color? But what if this wasn’t the case? What if these two scenes aren’t linear and The Doctor didn’t regenerate straight away? And so Season 6B was born. The Doctor regenerated, landed on Earth as per his exile and that’s that. At the time this was seen as one linear moment.

As the next actor hadn’t been cast yet, The Doctor’s full regeneration wasn’t seen, and when the series returned in 1970, the newly regenerated Doctor played by Jon Pertwee stepped out of the TARDIS and collapsed. They sentence him to exile on Earth and force him to regenerate, with audiences last seeing The Doctor spinning away from the screen.

The final serial in the season has The Doctor put on trial by the Time Lords for breaking the rules of noninterference. The idea of Season 6B originated as a fan theory, which saw further adventures for Patrick Troughton’s Second Doctor after the events of Season 6. With new things being added, such as missing adventures, unknown incarnations of The Doctor and debates around The Doctor’s family and origin, the series is constantly retconning itself, even going so far as to add an entire new season.
With so much contradictory content, that encompasses not only the television series, but the many comic books, novels and audio dramas, it is no wonder that the canon is constantly in flux. Doctor Who canon often leaves many fans scratching their heads.
